Thanks Marco, I just tried the new package (which I re-compiled for amd64 from that link). Unfortunately, rebooting results in a lot of disk thrashing, because of four "modprobe" processes that start eating all available memory. After consuming about ~2 GB memory each, the kernel first tries killing some other processes to free memory, then panics with an "out of memory error". So it looks the new package actually makes things worse :-|.
