I experienced the hangs with Debian's 3.0 kernel, too.
Does the Debian 3.0 kernel contain a function probe_itpm in the
drivers/char/tpm/tpm_tis.c driver? If not, it would be a different
problem you are seeing.
I looked again at my grub menu, and it's 3.2-rc and 3.1 that were
affected. 3.2-rc triggered more reliable.
(probe_itpm was introduced to drivers/char/tpm/tpm_tis.c in
9519de3f (tpm_tis: Probing function for Intel iTPM bug)
. That is it hit mainline for v3.1-rc1.)
I take it's not a problem in a Debian 3.0 kernel (since the culprit
patch only appeared in 3.1-rc1). We will submit the relevant patch(es)
to the 3.2.x stable kernel.
