Dear John, have many thanks for your report. For some reason I am only reading it now. The problem reminds me of a couple of upstream strcpy fixes that have already been applied in the early 7.0.x series. It was the update of the glibc that let those problems surface.
You would do us all a great favour if you gave the newer versions of the package a chance. I uploaded 7.0.8-2 a couple of days ago which is long past the strcpy fixed I was referring to.
