Package: logrotate
Version: 3.7.8-6
Severity: wishlist

/etc/logrotate.conf has "compress" commented out. Yet all of
the /etc/logrotate.d files on my newly installed system specify
"compress".

With filesystems such as btrfs and ZFS offering built-in compression,
it's possible to keep log files compressed on disk right from the start.
Also, if snapshots are in use, the compression step can end up costing
disk space because the original log files still exist in the snapshots.

I think it would be nice if the system administrator could change the
logrotate "compress" setting once in /etc/logrotate.conf rather than
have to change it in each file in /etc/logrotate.d (both initially and
as packages are added). How do you feel about changing the
logrotate.conf default (i.e. uncommenting "compress") with the idea that
package maintainers would then be asked to remove the "compress"
specifiers from the logrotate.d files in their packages?

Thanks,
Richard
