Just a note for anyone else having this problem.
The reason the server in question required port forwarding for Seive from the WAN IP address was because of a typo in the /etc/hostname file. Fixing that type so that the master Kolab server listed in the Settings tab of the webadmin resolves to the localhost removes the need for the port forwarding.
