Hello,
IMO, looking for gnome-session running is not sufficient. It works only
for /usr/share/xsessions/gnome{,-fallback}.desktop sessions.

It does not work for any sessions not directly invoking the
gnome-session binary:

1) Default session (/usr/share/gdm/BuiltInSessions/default.desktop) - if
xsession configuration is not customized -
calls /usr/bin/x-session-manager (managed by alternatives, defaults
to /usr/bin/gnome-session). This is the default session for new accounts
until user selects something else in the GDM greeter.

2) Users may call gnome-settings-daemon directly (or by customizing
xsession or startx config files, etc.). This is useful for simple window
managers.

Is there some obstacle why not look for gnome-settings-daemon rather
then gnome-session?

Cheers, Petr.
