Hmmm, well, the original concern has been addressed and the
download-only in ncurses mode is achieved if one doesn't confirm
installation after downloading, as the first reply suggests. Why
would you want to download stuff in visual mode in some other way,
then exit without doing anything with the package? You can use the
"download" in command line for that, or apt-get, or probably can be
achieved in a few other ways. And there's nothing to do in aptitude
with a local package, if not install it or keep it uninstalled -- you
cannot unpack it and see the contents or anything else, and the
package's basic info it's already present without needing the package
downloaded.

The bug hasn't seen action from aptitude's developers for almost 10
years now (so implementing that was never really deemed necessary or
important at all), the retitle was made by somebody else 8 years ago,
and nobody after that supports that by adding a "I want that too" or
suggesting better ways to implement it; so I guess that it's not a
very popular demand.

So in cases like this, I as a developer would prefer to have the bugs
closed and if needed resubmitted with current/relevant information,
than having to go through all questions already implemented long ago
before realising that what's missing is something barely related to
the original request, and that it's not clear how to implement.

So that's my reasoning and why I closed. But if you have fresh ideas
about how to implement the suggestions or you want to keep it open for
any other reason, please do :-)

Regards.
