I'm afraid that it won't switch to a symlink until you reboot. This is because information that is in /etc/mtab but not /proc/mounts would be lost, and this could prevent filesystems from being umounted. This information is written to /run/mount/utab when it's switched to a symlink. If you don't fall into this category, then there's nothing stopping you replacing it manually without rebooting. Mainly includes stuff like "user" mounts, and potentially NFS and CIFS, which add additional information. Regards, Roger -- .''`.
