Whoops! Looks like this is actually related to other bugs already filed, both fixed in git. One is a deceptive NEWS file (that tells me this version uses dpkg triggers rather than the bash-based autoload mechanism that's actually in use), and the other is Bug #648319 where /etc/bash_completion has been replaced by /usr/share/bash-completion/bash_completion.
