This is a known bug. Unfortunately, it's a bug in python-dbus, rather than in
WICD.

I "fixed" it upstream by not supporting networks with NULL bytes in them, i.e.
it won't (hopefully) fail hard like this, but you won't be able to connect (or
do anything) with them.

This really sounds like a bug in your wifi driver. I haven't ever seen
networks with \x00 using my laptop, and it has been reported only one other
time. See the upstream bugreport I linked at the beginning of this mail.

Let's try to investigate this further, maybe we can overcome the driver bug. Do
you see \x00 only with hidden networks? Have you ever encountered a non-hidden
network with that NULL byte?

Are you sure that it the router isn't broadcasting '\x00'? If this latter one
is true, then I fear there won't be space for workarounds :(
