Hi Anibal, I was dissapointed to find this bug was still present in Squeeze and would like to make sure it is eliminated before our next stable release.
At first, I thought you were MIA, but it seems you may just be very busy and have too many Debian commitments on your plate. May I help co-maintain the ssmtp package going forward and upload a new version with this fix? Or, if you don't have time for it at all, I'd be happy to take over the package entirely. Or, if neither of those options are of interest to you, can I at least convince you to give your blessing to a one-off NMU to fix this problem? By way of testing, I have been running a patched version (http://freeside.biz/~ivan/freeside-squeeze/ssmtp/) on my server and just under a hundred customer servers for over a year without problems. If I don't hear back from you at all concerning this 3+ year old bug (even if to simply say "I looked at the patch but it wasn't ready for inclusion, here's what needs to be done"), then I will assume you are okay with at least an NMU and proceed with that.
