Actually, after reporting this I noticed there were different names used in the same way in debian/rules. So at least you should be consistant in all places. That said, it is not immediately obvious what the best name is, although I agree that PEARNAME or PEAR_NAME are a bit misleading. Maybe PEAR_PKG_NAME?
