Switching to debhelper compat 9 also activates hardened build flags:
# hardening-check /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libaudiofile.so.0
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libaudiofile.so.0:
Stack protected: yes
Fortify Source functions: yes (some protected functions found)
Read-only relocations: yes
