the problem reported originally is still the case in sqeeze and the workaround by Petr doesn't work for me, I'm not sure why. running setupcon in command line after boot fixes the fonts.
this is especially annoyoing since I run localized debian with a language that requires a non-standard font and most console programs output is unreadable without the setup.
