More ... I took off Debian's packages and replaced with Oracle's. Modules build fine here, claim to start up and dmesg shows them starting. However, will receive the same error starting a virtual machine.
Virtualbox, as opposed to the majority of packages, will not run correctly in crossed architectures, it seems. The 32 bit version that will install correctly might only ruin with a 32-bit kernel. Being a virtual machine, maybe this is how it should be. I will retry with the 32-bit kernel booted and see if it works. (One can force-architecture the 64-bit version but this has ELF problems in libraries so will not work.)
