Thanks, Elimar. Could you say a little more about this? Looking at [1] and [2] I don't see any information about an alsa-firmware package being requested and progress in making it happen. And the failure mode here (crashes, mostly) does not match my expectation for how a non-buggy operating system would report missing firmware. Perhaps there is room for people to help in that direction.
