FYI, GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1 was needed to avoid the effect of this bug, but introduced problems with other applications. I've tried emacs23 (on a Debian/unstable machine) with GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS unset, and the bug doesn't appear with emacs23.
