When installing task-xfce4-desktop, gstreamer0.10-plugins-good etc are installed as dependencies of quodlibet, and provide gstreamer0.10-audiosync. (Pulseaudio does get pulled in, as a recommends of a vlc plugin, but gstreamer0.10-pluseaudio is not installed.) Another way this can happen is if a user has gnome previously installed and just installs xfce4 with apt. Perhaps gstreamer0.10-audiosync is really too broad a virtual package for xfce4-mixer to depend on? -- see shy jo
