I was able to reproduce the problem when the following two conditions are met: * GnuCash is ran with GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1 * the account opened is large: on my machine the threshold seems to be around 1700 transactions in basic ledger and single line modes, but I guess this depends on the size of the font used. The problem occurs with a smaller number of transaction in double line mode or in transaction journal mode. There is a simple workaround for displaying the last transactions in the account: go to "Edit->Preferences->Register Defaults->Number of Transactions" and set a limit to the number of transactions that are displayed. I’m lowering the severity to normal since setting GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS is not the normal way of running GDK. This option is more a backward-compatibility mode for applications that are not compatible with some changes introduced in GTK+ 2.18 (and GnuCash is not one of these).
