Thanks for your report. Unfortunately it has served to highlight to the CLI applications team that none of us is really maintaining gfax in Debian. I just tried it and it immediately segfaulted without even getting as far as it did for you. I'll be orphaning or removing the package soon. I'm sorry that we're unable to do a good enough job of maintenance here.
