Please attach full "dmesg" output from booting without the viafb module. Not sure what else to suggest. Does the nosmp (i.e., the -486) kernel behave differently? Did this system work well with lenny before? If so, could you try e.g. a lenny live cd to check if it still does? Thanks for writing, and hope that helps.
