I think you are just putting the option in the wrong section. If you
want to get debug logs from the main daemon, put it under [sssd] (it's
then used for sssd_nss and sssd_pam etc too). Note that the sssd process
doesn't show the option when you do it this way.
The git version uses /etc/default/sssd for setting commandline options,
so you can put '-d 3' there as well.
