Thanks for a very clear explanation. Let's leave it alone then.
(Rationale: It sounds like this feature of command_bidi_pipe never
worked before and is not something reverse-dependencies in squeeze
rely on --- phew. For example, git-svn in stable sets up
$ENV{GIT_DIR} for itself. A trap for the unwary, but not important
enough for a stable update.)
