I've also tried running gnome-shell version 3.2.1-3 our of experimental and that too hangs in the same way.
When it hangs, gnome-shell stops responding to key board and mouse events. The mouse cursor still moves but clicking on things doesn't do anything. Keyboard actions are also unresponsive, apart from Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get a vitual console, but on about 1/3 of the hangs not even switching to a virual console helps, although I can SSH back into the machine and kill X that way.
