As far as I can see, upstream supports Python 3.X. It'd nice if there
was a package for Python 3 in Debian.
You can build for Python 3, but there are some issues which are still
to be resolved (mostly just related to Unicode strings vs bytes) which
mean it's probably not really suitable for mainstream use yet:

If there's software which is actually using the bindings with Python 3,
I'm happy to try to add a package (even happier to apply patches to do
so...)
Sphinx >= 1.1 (which I plan to upload to experimental soon) supports
Python 3 and can use Xapian as search engine for so called "web
support":
