I'm not sure if this is common knowledge yet, but the free ati driver (including 3d and desktop compositing support) has come a *long* way since the squeeze release. No, you won't get the same performance on the most demanding games, but then again you will also never again have to deal with this kind of unnecessary long-term breakage either.
