could you please enable a jail which would watch /var/log/mail.log,
boost fail2ban log level to debug and then output of

tail -f /var/log/fail2ban.log /var/log/mail.log

while the "attach" is on the way

P.S. mention that you are reporting issue against version in stable
debian.  such issue, unless security-related most probably wouldn't be
granted upload into stable.  Could you also try version from unstable?
it should be installable if you just download a .deb file
