True.  I'd be happy to review a patch adding them, if you have the
time.  (For reference, here's what Gerrit Pape's debian/implicit does:

        : debian/$*/DEBIAN/md5sums
        @rm -f debian/$*/DEBIAN/md5sums
        @cd debian/$* && find * -path 'DEBIAN' -prune -o \
          -type f -exec md5sum {} >>DEBIAN/md5sums \;
        @chmod 0644 debian/$*/DEBIAN/md5sums
        @test -s debian/$*/DEBIAN/md5sums || \
          rm -f debian/$*/DEBIAN/md5sums
