More notes... It seem I can save a .PDF successfully, if it's saved with .PNG compression.
With .JPG compression the save fails; the terminal shows:
Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to retrieve the file info for
`file:///tmp/Foo%207%2019%2011%20jpg.pdf': Error stating file '/tmp/Foo 7 19 11
jpg.pdf': No such file or directory at /usr/bin/gscan2pdf line 10579.
