This path fixes it for me. gnome-settings-daemon no longer crashes. Thanks Vince!
But unfortunately gnome-session still doesn't start when I select "Gnome" from gdm3. Instead, if I start it from the fallback xterm window, it works and seems to load everything normally. Admittedly this may be a different problem than the one I initially reported. -- Nico
