True. The heterogeneous network integration itself is a complicated topic deserving a reference of itself. > Anyway, if I understand correctly, you are saying that the method > for enabling WINS hostname resolution (using nsswitch.conf) is too > difficult to discover. Getting Debian system to use WINS? I do not know this. > I'm reassigning to the Debian reference, > so we can consider explaining it in an appropriate place there. If there is a good guide for it (web page or document in any package), I would love to hear. > Help of all kinds (finding where to put this text, rough wording, > proofreading) would of course be very welcome. This itself is a content beyond the objective of Debian reference but pointer to such good documentation is something I consider to include. Anyway, how did you do it? Tell us. Your English is good enough to explain things between non-native speakers. I am not native speaker either. Anyway first google hit of "netbios dhcp server setting" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313314 Is this what you did (except for DHCP server on Debian.) Which DHCP server did you use and how did you configure it. This way, seems to require nothing but simple modification to dhcp server. Wait ... why not check "netbios dhcp server setting linux" .. aha ... there are more info. It comes up with several site explaining tricks. netbios-name-servers option seems to be the trick you need on DHCP server setting on Linux according to TLDP site http://tldp.org/HOWTO/DHCP/index.html (slightly old info.) But gentoo wiki say the similar so this is OK. (http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/DHCP) http://www.brennan.id.au/index.html for Linux Home Server HOWTO was interesting too. Anyway, Debian Reference is mostly focuses on client use. The pertinent section is "6.10. Other network application servers" http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ch06.en.html#_other_network_application_servers I like to think this addition to be simple mention of netbios over TCP/IP protocol is used as name resolution on WINS system etc. Since it is not appropriate to elaborate too much on Windows system, simple reference to these key words referencing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NetBIOS_over_TCP/IP http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Internet_Name_Service and DHCP server has capability to cope with them should be enough. But I am not yet comfortable to summarize this in a short sentence. Thus HELP ME! Osamu -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble?
