Quoting from Vidalia package documentation:

Currently, Vidalia speaks directly through a socket to Tor, only required
steps to perform is to answer properly at Debconf templates for adding
Vidalia users into debian-tor group, who owns Tor's Control Socket.

That means that you _don't_ (and even shouldn't!) use Vidalia to launch
Tor process any longer.

All you need to do is answer Debconf template question with the proper X
user that's going to use Vidalia and start tor daemon. You can always
use 'dpkg-reconfigure vidalia' to add new/unselected users.

Also, do bare in mind you'll need to remove any configuration you may
have at ~/.vidalia/torrc...

Please let me know if this answer is still not resolving your condition.

Cheers,
