thank you for your continued stream of information and help to
troubleshoot this problem.
It turns out this should be fixed in gtk+2.0 itself, rather. Raising
severity level to critical since gtk2 currently breaks other software
on the system. Specifically, I want to ask the gtk+2.0 maintainers to
make sure that the minimum version dependency introduced via
${shlibds:Depends} or {misc:Depends} is raised to 2.24.5-4 or higher
when linking against libgtk2.0-0 from unstable. This ensures that a
package compiled against libgtk2 with multiarch support cannot be
installed on a system with libgtk2 without such support as was the case
for you.

PS: I'll make sure to also deal with the bits from my end that are left
dangling but as you confirmed have no serious impact on usability.
