debian/dhclient-script.linux will not work with read-only root. For a read-only root to work, and support dhclient-script writing to /etc/resolv.conf, then /etc/resolv.conf would have to be a symlink to a writeable location (ie, /run or /var/run). Currently, that will not work as dhclient-script will write to /etc/resolv.conf.dhclient-script.new which will fail. It should, instead write directly to /etc/resolv.conf, following the symlink if it is. This bug has been raised against Ubuntu, and a patch is attached there for Ubuntu.
