I have a similar issue using this version of torsocks with irssi to connect to
Freenode's hidden service. In the irssi window, I receive the error:

"Tor is not an HTTP proxy"

and the following is in my /var/log/tor/notices.log:

Sep 21 17:28:38.000 [warn] Your application (using socks4 to port 80) is giving
Tor only an IP address. Applications that do DNS resolves themselves may leak
information. Consider using Socks4A (e.g. via privoxy or socat) instead. For
more information, please see
https://wiki.torproject.org/TheOnionRouter/TorFAQ#SOCKSAndDNS.
Sep 21 17:33:28.000 [warn] Socks version 67 not recognized. (Tor is not an http
proxy.)
Sep 21 17:33:28.000 [warn] _connection_mark_unattached_ap(): Bug: stream
(marked at connection_edge.c:2224) sending two socks replies?
