I reproduced this again right now because there are 0 upgrades after
today's automatic run (via cron). What I've sent you is all I get. The
above lines where from the short log (u-a.log), the specific log with
the timestamp is an empty file.

Indeed, this seems to be the case due to this:

root@frost:/var/log/unattended-upgrades# apt-get dist-upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
The following packages have been kept back:
  gnome-utils
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.
