  If you don't want aptitude to remove unused packages, you can disable this 
behavior in the configuration file.  It's a core program feature and not 
going away.

  I was going to additionally say that it's not even feasible to detect 
metapackages, but I notice that debtags has a "metapackage" tag, so maybe 
future versions of aptitude can use that to (optionally) override the usual 
decisions about what's automatically installed.
