Just a small update: Your bug is "fixed" in version 1.4.6-2 (available in Debian unstable and testing branches) and in version 1.4.6-1.1+squeeze1, which will be part of the next point release of Debian Squeeze. However it was "just" fixed by updating the documentation, as really fixing it would require rewriting (and testing) all maintainer scripts. However, I hope to really address this bug when uploading a new upstream version of nagvis the coming days, where I will move the default configuration to a different backend (livestatus instead of ndoutils), where you don't have to configure database access. By the way: The new package versions I uploaded also fix some other minor issues, so I hope you'll find them usefull nontheless.
