Package: grub-pc Version: 1.99-12 Severity: normal Hi,
on my computer, grub is installed on /dev/sda1 partition. During upgrade to version 1.99-12 of grub-pc, the following error occured: Setting up grub-pc (1.99-12) ... /usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partitionless disk or to a partition. This is a BAD idea.. /usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and their use is discouraged.. /usr/sbin/grub-setup: error: cannot read `/grub/core.img' correctly. Then following dialog is displayed: "GRUB failed to install to the following devices: /dev/sda1 Do you want to continue anyway? If you do, your computer may not start up properly. Writing GRUB to boot device failed - continue? <Yes> <No>" If I select "No", the error above and the dialog box is repeated. The installation run the grub-setup as: /usr/sbin/grub-setup --force --directory=/boot/grub --device-map=/boot/grub/device.map /dev/sda1 Manual execution of the command above leads to the same error. Thanks, Martin Kourim -- Package-specific info: *********************** WARNING grub-setup left core.img in filesystem *********************** BEGIN /proc/mounts /dev/disk/by-uuid/ceb81ec8-e820-4931-ae82-64824f8b51a1 / btrfs rw,relatime 0 0 /dev/mapper/sda6_crypt /home btrfs rw,relatime 0 0 /dev/sda1 /boot ext4 rw,relatime,user_xattr,barrier=1,data=ordered 0 0 *********************** END /proc/mounts *********************** BEGIN /boot/grub/device.map (hd0) /dev/disk/by-id/ata-HITACHI_HTS723232A7A364_E3834563JNSUVN (hd1) /dev/disk/by-id/usb-Ut165_USB2FlashStorage_080730c5a44754-0:0 *********************** END /boot/grub/device.map *********************** BEGIN /boot/grub/grub.cfg # # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE # # It is automatically generated by grub-mkconfig using templates # from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub # ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/00_header ### if [ -s $prefix/grubenv ]; then load_env fi set default="0" if [ "${prev_saved_entry}" ]; then set saved_entry="${prev_saved_entry}" save_env saved_entry set prev_saved_entry= save_env prev_saved_entry set boot_once=true fi function savedefault { if [ -z "${boot_once}" ]; then saved_entry="${chosen}" save_env saved_entry fi } function load_video { insmod vbe insmod vga insmod video_bochs insmod video_cirrus } insmod part_msdos insmod btrfs set root='(hd0,msdos2)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root ceb81ec8-e820-4931-ae82-64824f8b51a1 if loadfont /usr/share/grub/unicode.pf2 ; then set gfxmode=640x480 load_video insmod gfxterm insmod part_msdos insmod ext2 set root='(hd0,msdos1)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root a4248648-5790-43c6-a7de-fdbe011b1594 set locale_dir=($root)/grub/locale set lang=en_US insmod gettext fi terminal_output gfxterm set timeout=5 ### END /etc/grub.d/00_header ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme ### insmod part_msdos insmod btrfs set root='(hd0,msdos2)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root ceb81ec8-e820-4931-ae82-64824f8b51a1 insmod png if background_image /usr/share/images/desktop-base/spacefun-grub.png; then set color_normal=light-gray/black set color_highlight=white/black else set menu_color_normal=cyan/blue set menu_color_highlight=white/blue fi ### END /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/10_linux ### menuentry 'Debian GNU/Linux, with Linux 3.0.0-1-amd64' --class debian --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os { insmod gzio insmod part_msdos insmod ext2 set root='(hd0,msdos1)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root a4248648-5790-43c6-a7de-fdbe011b1594 echo 'Loading Linux 3.0.0-1-amd64 ...' linux /vmlinuz-3.0.0-1-amd64 root=UUID=ceb81ec8-e820-4931-ae82-64824f8b51a1 ro i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.lvds_downclock=1 quiet echo 'Loading initial ramdisk ...' initrd /initrd.img-3.0.0-1-amd64 } menuentry 'Debian GNU/Linux, with Linux 3.0.0-1-amd64 (recovery mode)' --class debian --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os { insmod gzio insmod part_msdos insmod ext2 set root='(hd0,msdos1)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root a4248648-5790-43c6-a7de-fdbe011b1594 echo 'Loading Linux 3.0.0-1-amd64 ...' linux /vmlinuz-3.0.0-1-amd64 root=UUID=ceb81ec8-e820-4931-ae82-64824f8b51a1 ro single echo 'Loading initial ramdisk ...' initrd /initrd.img-3.0.0-1-amd64 } ### END /etc/grub.d/10_linux ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/20_linux_xen ### ### END /etc/grub.d/20_linux_xen ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ### ### END /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/40_custom ### # This file provides an easy way to add custom menu entries.
