I note this now happens for my program Viking too (not changed in Debian repository).
One doesn't even need to open a file, just go to file->open then cancel. Then file->open again and it crashes. "Gtk:ERROR:/scratch/build-area/gtk+2.0-2.24.6/gtk/gtkfilechooserdefault.c:8764:gtk_file_chooser_default_initial_focus: assertion failed: (widget != NULL)" I think this is Gtk+ problem, which has probably been solved upstream, see: http://git.gnome.org/browse/gtk+/commit/?h=gtk-2-24&id=a350b667c1c1ce19c897871806fdc1b1b484c84a HTH.
