Downgrade of nvidia from 280.13.really.275.28-1 to 280.13-1 (actually an upgrade, judging from the version numbers) also did the trick for me, including fixing gtk display breakage. (Can't test nouveau, my hardware doesn't like it.) For the record: The crashes happened with libreoffice 3.4.3-1 as well as 3.3.4-1 (via ssh X forward) as well as acroread 9.4.2-0 (from debian-multimedia.org).
