As stated above by Ari the parallel uri is working fine for me with latest cups package installed. (1.5.0-5)

I unblacklisted usblp from /etc/modprobe.d and ran sudo modprobe usblp.
I removed my printer from cups using the administration option, then I used Add printer, I then chose local printer SCSI and added the URI parallel:/dev/usb/lp0 (my printer was lp zero )

Today I ran some updates and cups 1.5.0-5 got pulled in as a dependency for, I think, libcups2, anyway I decided to do some more digging to see if I could find out more about this bug.

Still does not detect my usb printer with usblp blacklisted, which incidently is also an Epson Stylus Photo R300.
But I now see this in dmesg when I turn my printer on:-

[ 93.442080] usb 2-1.6.4: new high speed USB device number 6 using ehci_hcd [ 93.551263] usb 2-1.6.4: New USB device found, idVendor=04b8, idProduct=0803 [ 93.551268] usb 2-1.6.4: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3

[ 95.298553] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk

When I search for a printer with cups I then see the following in my dmesg:-

[ 221.799018] usb 2-1.6.4: usbfs: interface 0 claimed by usb-storage while 'usb' sets config #1 [ 221.799141] usb 2-1.6.4: usbfs: process 2671 (usb) did not claim interface 0 before use

So I think this bug is related to or a duplicate of bug # 635041 (635...@bugs.debian.org) The problem seems to come from the card reader which is built in to this particular printer, and it seems to be allocated the usb interface which should be used to communicate with the printer.

But thanks to Ari and his workaround I now have a functioning printer and cups all up to date with the latest packages.
