Package: debdelta
Version: 0.44
Severity: wishlist

Dear Maintainer,
I use debdelta quite a lot. For last couple of days I have not been
able to get debdeltas and hence had to use the normal way [1] which
takes too much time, effort and bandwidth which could have been saved
or used elsewhere. On further investigation it became clear that this
is/was due to debdelta.debian.net service/website being down [2] . I
wish there was a way that a user could see/know if debdelta.debian.net
service is down or not before committing and trying to update. This
could be some sort of user-configurable service done in either the
systemwide configuration file [3] or the user's own directory [4] I do
know that the eventual goal of debdelta is that the service is
integrated within the various package managers and the
debdelta.debian.net service itself integrated into the various mirrors
which give package archives access as of date [5] .

It would be probably be atleast couple of years before the debdelta
software is considered mature and ready for inclusion in the various
package managers as can be seen of the state of various discussions of
debian-infrastructure which are discussed in debian-devel [6]. One can
see the passionate discussion about systemd which happened couple of
months back as an example.

For the record I did see the debdelta-service news [7] through
google's cache as well [8]

1. sudo aptitude update; sudo aptitude safe-upgrade -y
2. http://www.isup.me/debdelta.debian.net
3. /etc/debdelta/sources.conf
4. ~/.debdelta/sources.conf
5. http://www.debian.org/mirror/list
6. http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel
7. from the cache debdelta-upgrade service news

        24th Aug 2011: added support for data.tar.xz
Aug 2011: some days no deltas were generated , due to blackouts

8. in google cache:http://debdelta.debian.net

Looking forward to know if something can be done in the interim.
