Package: cameramonitor Version: 0.2-2.1 Severity: normal Hi.
As seems to be common, the built-in webcam of my laptop lights up an LED when it is switched on, and switches it off together with the camera. Previously the status bar icon of cameramonitor would only appear when the camera was switched on and disappear when it was switched off again. Also, it would pop up messages saying the camera was switched on/off. Now behaviour has changed: When cameramonitor is started at session-start-up, the status icon does not appear, as befor. It appears when the webcam is switched on. But no message pops up. Then, when the webcam is switched off again, the icon stays, does not pop up a message, and the tool tip still claims the camera is on. When killing cameramonitor and restarting it, no icon appears, just as if the camera is off. When starting a 2nd X session cameramonitor starting in that session also seems to find the camera is off. Now I am wondering if I should be paranoid (can the camera be on if it's LED is switched off, or are they coupled in a way that is not possible?) or something has changed with the data cameramonitor uses to detect the current status of the webcam. I checked this with camorama, cheese, guvcview, and skype. I also attached an external USB webcam and reconfigured cameramonitor to /dev/video1 (instead of /dev/video0 for the built-in cam). Same results. Settings in the preferences dialogue (cameramonitor -p) are: Video device: /dev/video0 Timeout (seconds): 2 Notification: [+] Show notification when camera is switched Autostart [ ] Autostart Camera Monitor with every session (it's off because I start it via a short script that I put in the autostart settings.
