Dear Kingsley,

I was discussing this type of behaviour of festival with Kumar last week in
conjunction with my assisting in
the maintaining festival and mentioned that it appeared on my system but I
needed to test on different
hardware before filing a bug.

Like you this only occurred to me with more recent version of festival.

This may be a confirmation on different hardware.

A temporary kludge workaround is to install pulseaudio package on your
system and add
to a .festivalrc file in your home directory with the following commands:-

(Parameter.set 'Audio_Command "paplay $FILE")
(Parameter.set 'Audio_Method 'Audio_Command)
(Parameter.set 'Audio_Required_Format 'snd)

I do not consider this an adequate workaround and continue to try to find a
proper solution.
I also noticed the kludge workaround is slightly "buzzy". You will know when
you hear it. I am also interested in
finding out why this occurs. Would you be able to confirm or otherwise if it
is more "buzzy" than your recollection
when you used the older festival.

Would you be able to verify if the kludge removes the problem to help in
narrowing done the bug. I don't suggest
you keep the kludge if you don't want to use pulseaudio for other reasons
just give me an idea of whether it disappears
in that case.

best regards,
Peter
