As much as the proxy’s behavior sucks, the proxy is under no obligation to support the IMAP standard.

No it isn’t! You still get to see your mail within seconds instead of waiting for the next poll interval, and it’s still more efficient to start another IDLE request every so often than to completely tear down the connection and create a new one.
Please file a bug or support request against the proxy that drops the connection so soon in the IDLE phase.
