Package: linux-2.6 Version: 3.0.0-1 Severity: normal In short: I've got a zombie process child of init. I suppose that's a kernel bug.
Here's what I did: I've tried to run iceweasel under valgrind from zsh with: valgrind --trace-children=yes --log-fd=3 3> vg.out iceweasel then I quit the iceweasel window as it was frozen, then tried Ctrl-C, but I couldn't get the zsh prompt. xvii:~> ps -ft pts/8 UID PID PPID C STIME TTY TIME CMD vinc17 8032 23516 22 14:38 pts/8 00:02:33 [memcheck-amd64-] <defunct> vinc17 23516 23512 0 11:29 pts/8 00:00:00 zsh and process 8032 is the only child of zsh. A strace on the zsh process just shows: rt_sigsuspend([INT] Then I did a "kill -9 23516". The zsh process died as expected, but the zombie is still there, now a child of init. And the system says that iceweasel is still running (so that I can no longer start a new one), while I can't see any related process (ps -aef | grep firefox and ditto for iceweasel). -- Package-specific info: ** Version: Linux version 3.0.0-1-amd64 (Debian 3.0.0-1) (b...@decadent.org.uk) (gcc version 4.5.3 (Debian 4.5.3-4) ) #1 SMP Sun Jul 24 02:24:44 UTC 2011 ** Command line: root=/dev/mapper/xvii-root ro quiet ** Not tainted ** Kernel log: [61546.576072] usb 1-6: reset high speed USB device number 4 using ehci_hcd [61546.720047] ata2: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300) [61546.744441] restoring control 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000101/0/2 [61546.744444] restoring control 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000101/1/3 [61546.744447] restoring control 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000101/2/6 [61546.744450] restoring control 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000101/3/7 [61546.744452] restoring control 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000101/5/9 [61546.776047] firewire_core: rediscovered device fw0 [61546.790946] ata2.00: configured for UDMA/100 [61546.889757] dell_wmi: Received unknown WMI event (0x11) [61547.051642] input: AT Translated Set 2 keyboard as /devices/platform/i8042/serio0/input/input18 [61547.924065] input: AT Translated Set 2 keyboard as /devices/platform/i8042/serio0/input/input19 [61549.764277] ata1: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300) [61549.780322] ata1.00: configured for UDMA/133 [61549.955677] PM: resume of devices complete after 3744.671 msecs [61549.955924] PM: Finishing wakeup.
