In addition to this, -S will try to STARTTLS before sending any EHLO (nagios doesn't support sending EHLO at all, anyway), which exim doesn't accept. The argument to HELO, by the way, defaults to the hostname, but that should be the fully qualified hostname, otherwise the HELO will not correctly verify -- if you have enabled HELO verification, this will cause a logfile entry at least.
