It is. xpdf doesn't handle being maximized properly.
Using ratpoison, the bug is always present after starting xpdf, and goes
away after Ctrl-t l ("redisplay").
When I tried with openbox, the bug would manifest when using the
"maximize" button, but not when manually resizing (to any size).
If GNOME / Metacity implemented maximizing as "resize to <screen size>"
instead of a generic "maximize", that'd explain why it works there.
