severity 625447 wisshlist tags 625447 - upstream tags 625447 + moreinfo thanks
Hi, I am doing BTS clean ups. (Severity grave bug needs to be filed with extra care. http://www.debian.org/Bugs/Developer#severities ) Since the original bug reporter admitted "I installed a squeeze system and apt-cdrom was working.", apt-cdrom works under under proper dist-upgrade. It failed under "dpkg -i ...". As it was done, libapt-pkg-libc6.7-6-4.6 -> libapt-pkg4.10 package upgrade was not done and caused broken dependency. This looks nothing but wrong operation of dpkg command sequence by the user. Unlike apt, dpkg may cause broken dependency. Of course, it is nice to have squeeze version of apt to be installable and functioning in lenny system. But creating broken system under broken dependency is not a bug of apt. I could close this bug but keep this as wishlist for now. Unless the original reporter supplys enough information within a month or so to prove this is a valid bug, it is best this bug. Since tagging for upstream is meaningless, I am reverting it too. The reported example was a bit convoluted, too. My suggestions to follow this bug report by the original bug reporter are the followings: * Split lenny and squeeze case in separated output with proper package dependency. * report all dependency packages to be matching versions. * Use latest squeeze package for apt * Run "sudo apt-cdrom ident" * Include /etc/fstab contents for CDROM * Are you upgrading this system without Internet connection? * What version of CD-ROM do you have on hands and trying to use? Lenny or Squeeze? Are you trying to use these to limit or avoid Internet connection requirements for the upgrade? * Clarify what are you doing for "using apt-cdrom for upgrading my system from a web interface". "Web interface" is quite intriguing. (Some time, "web" is used as "Internet". Then why bother CD ROM?) ...
